Face Implant
The permanent version of a mask. You pay a large sum at a clinic, get a new face and a new name, and everybody forgets you.
What it costs
| Default | |
|---|---|
| Price | $500,000, from the bank |
| Wait between two implants for the same character | 60 days |
| What you keep | Your money, your items, your job, your house — everything (unless your server set items to take away, such as an ID card) |
What happens
- Go to the clinic and talk to the surgeon.
- Edit your face in your server's appearance editor. Nothing else.
- Pick a new first and last name. It has to be different from the old one.
- A short black screen ("Surgery in progress..."), and you wake up as someone else: "The surgery went well. People who knew you will not recognize you."
What "someone else" means
| Everyone who remembered you | Forgets you, completely |
|---|---|
| Everyone's familiarity with you | Gone |
| The separate "masked person" memories people built of you | Gone too |
| Any name you told people while masked | Gone |
| Your voice | New — people who knew your voice do not know this one |
| Your own memories of everybody else | Kept. You still know all of them |
That last line is the one that surprises people. Only other people forget the patient. The patient walks out of the clinic still knowing every face in the city.
A barber is not a face implant
Recognition does not look at the shape of your face. Only the face implant (or another script that uses the implant export) gives a character a new face as far as recognition is concerned.
So your character can restyle their face at a barber or an ordinary surgeon shop as often as they like — and everyone who knows them still knows them. That is on purpose: a cheap cosmetic change should not be a way around the whole system.
Where the clinic is
One clinic ships by default, near Mount Zonah Medical Center. Servers can move it, add more, price each one differently, hide it from the map ("a secret clinic"), or remove the clinic entirely and drive the whole thing from their own surgeon script. See Face Implant & Clinics.
If something goes wrong
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| You cancel in the editor | No charge, nothing changes ("Surgery cancelled. You were not charged.") |
| You take too long | The surgery is cancelled, no charge |
| The surgery is interrupted (crash, disconnect) | The script recovers it on restart; you are either finished or refunded |
| Your server has no usable face editor | By default you still get the new identity and the new name, with your face unchanged |
| Your server has no framework money (standalone) | The implant is free unless the server wires up its own payment |
Messages a player may see at the clinic:
| Message | Why |
|---|---|
| "Your face is still healing. Next implant possible in …" | The 60-day wait is still running |
| "You need $… for the surgery." | Not enough money in the paying account |
| "Choose a name different from your current one." | The new name is the same as the old one |
| "That name is not allowed." | Too short, too long, or a blocked word or character |
| "You can't have surgery while injured." / "…while restrained." | The player is down or cuffed |
| "The clinic is closed." | The server has no face editor and is set to refuse |
For staff
Admins with the identity permission can:
- start a free implant for a player (
/recognition:freeimplant); - reset an identity without payment or an editor
(
/recognition:resetidentity) — useful for character transfers; - change or clear the 60-day wait (
/recognition:implantcooldown); - change the price and the cooldown live from the panel, with no restart (this
needs the
settingspermission as well).
Every one of those needs a written reason and is logged.
