Overview

5code-recognition gives every character a memory of faces. Nobody knows anybody by default. You meet, you look, and only then does the game let your character put a name — or a description — to a person.

Everything is built around one loop: look → remember → recognize.

A scan in progress
A scan in progress: the character studies the person and the HUD at the top right fills.

Core concepts

  • Scan — the act of studying someone. You face them, press F3, pick them, and your character takes them in: their voice, their clothes, their face, their tattoos.
  • Cue — one of the four things your character can notice: voice, clothing, face, tattoo. Each fills a small bar while you can actually see or hear it.
  • Reliability (the ring) — the number in the middle of the HUD. It is how much of the person your character took in, from 0 to 100 %.
  • Memory — what your character keeps afterwards. It has a short line about where you met ("Met him on Grove St at night", "The guy from the tattoo shop"), a reliability, and a time it runs out.
  • Live result — the ten minutes after a successful scan, during which the person is still "that one, right there" for you.
  • Familiarity — how often you have recognized the same person. It makes re-learning them faster once a memory ran out, never stronger. From the familiar level the memory line reads "I know him well".
  • Quick look — somebody you still remember is recognized after 2–3 seconds instead of a full scan ("Recognized", or "Not sure" with the %).

The rules the whole script keeps

  • Nothing is ever forced. The script never blocks a shot, a robbery or a cuff. It records how well the attacker knew the victim and leaves the roleplay decision to your staff. See Proofs.
  • Real names never leave the server. What a player sees is either a name the other person told them, or an automatic description. Character names appear only in the staff panel and in staff exports.
  • The screen never gives away what your character does not know. A person you know behind a mask draws exactly the stranger screen: same words, same colours, same speed.
  • The server decides. Scores and memories are worked out on the server; the interface only draws what the server sends.
